Candidates are required to have a current HLTAID003 Provide first aid qualification to be eligible to attend this course, as it is part of the SISSS00111 - Pool Lifeguard Skillset. Candidates who hold a HLTAID011 - Provide first aid qualification are able to use this as evidence for partial Recognised Prior Learning (RPL), with the remainder of assessment evidence covered during the Pool Lifeguard course.

Requirements
Royal Life Saving Society NSW is not a CRICOS provider; it is unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa.

Participants wishing to complete this training are to be 16 years of age or turning 16 in the calendar within which the course is to be held to participate in this course.

A medium to high level of aquatic fitness is required for some practical components of the course. Candidates must also be able to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a resuscitation manikin placed on the floor.

There is a moderate to high level of reading and writing in this course. ACSF 3 language and reading level required. Candidates who experience language and/or literacy difficulties may identify and request additional learning support through the enrolment process.

Prerequisites
Candidates must provide a current HLTAID003 Provide first aid qualification upon enrolling into this course. Candidates who hold a HLTAID011 - Provide first aid qualification are able to use this as evidence for partial RPL, with the remainder of assessment evidence covered during the Pool Lifeguard course.

Course Description
Pool Lifeguarding is a fun, flexible and dynamic job. It is also a point of entry for a career in the aquatics industry. The first step in becoming a Pool Lifeguard is getting qualified. The training undertaken ensures that every Lifeguard possesses the skills and knowledge to handle a wide variety of incidents that occur on a day to day basis at aquatic centres.

Course Components include Supervision, Risk Management, Communication, Aquatic Rescues and Emergency Rescues.

The training course is conducted over two days. All candidates are required to successfully complete a range of practical assessments (within time limits) and a theory exam (which includes multiple chose, true/false and short answer questions). Candidates need to be competent in all theory and practical components to successfully complete the award conditions in order to achieve a Statement of Attainment.

Pre-Course Learning
Candidates will be provided with a Pool Lifeguard Pre-Course Workbook and Lifeguarding Manual which is to be completed and taken to your course. These resources will be posted within 48 hours from enrolment.

Candidates are required to bring:
  • Swimwear
  • Towels, goggles (if preferred)
  • Lunch (some venues may have options to buy food)
  • Writing Material (including pens)
  • Lifeguarding Manual
  • Completed Pool Lifeguard Pre-Course Workbook
  • In accordance with public health orders, please bring a face mask.


Outcomes
To achieve a Statement of Attainment, candidates must successfully complete the practical components under the award conditions.

Upon successful course completion of the course participants will be issued with a Nationally Recognised Training certificate (Statement of Attainment). Units of Competency achievable through this course include:
  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • HLTAID003 Provide first aid (Prerequisite)
  • PUAEME001 Provide emergency care
  • PUAEME003 Administer oxygen in an emergency situation
  • PUAOPE010 Operate an automated external defibrillator in an emergency
  • SISCAQU002 Perform basic water rescues
  • SISCAQU006 Supervise clients in aquatic locations
  • SISCAQU007 Perform advanced water rescues

Post Course
In addition to the successful completion of the course, candidates are required to complete an additional On-the-job assessment in order to obtain a Pool Lifeguard Licence. This On-the-job assessment ensures the Pool Lifeguard has completed a venue induction process and is able to apply the skills learnt in the training course at their place of employment.

COVID-19 Information:
In order to make sure we are conducting training as safely as possible, and to protect our learners and trainers, Royal Life Saving has implemented some changes to the way we facilitate our Face to Face workshops. We have:
  • Made hand hygiene facilities available at our training venues;
  • Increased cleaning frequencies and standards for general spaces and equipment;
  • Decreased group sizes;
  • Introduced physical distancing as per current Government restrictions;
  • and Mandated the completion of Infection Control learning modules for all staff and trainers.
Before attending a Face to face workshop, please consider your health and others'. Please do not attend your chosen course if you are feeling unwell or experiencing flu-like symptoms.

At your course you can expect:
  • To be asked to complete a Verbal Health Assessment, and Temperature check;
  • To be asked to wash/ sanitise your hands prior to entering the training space;
  • To be provided adequate personal space in order to maintain required physical distances from others;
  • To perform practical assessment tasks on yourself or on a manikin (not on others);
  • To be asked to excuse yourself from the training space if you declare yourself to be unwell, or begin displaying flu-like signs;
  • To be asked to wash/sanitise your hands before leaving the workshop.

These changes will help to keep everybody safe and they form part of our Terms and Conditions for participation. If you think you may have any difficulty complying with these changes, please contact your local Royal Life Saving office at your earliest convenience.
