Swim Teacher


Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher is a nationally recognised course that provides candidates with essential competencies to teach swimming and water safety to children aged 3-12 years. Accreditation is valid for three years. 

 This course will additionally cover the skills and knowledge required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. 
 Please note: Royal Life Saving Society NSW is not a CRICOS provider; it is unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa.  

Delivery Mode 
This course is delivered in a blended format; below are the steps and participant’s journey. 


Step 1 Book a course and complete Online Pre-Course Learning. Course schedules can be found in the ‘’How to enrol’’ section below.
Candidates are required to complete the Swim Teacher – Swimming and Water Safety Online Learning, prior to attending booked course.
Only those who have completed the online modules in full will be able to attend the practical component of this course. 

Step 2 Attend and complete practical face-to-face course. Participate in a 1-day practical face-to-face course.
Upon successful completion candidates are issued with a HLTAID009 – Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation Statement of Attainment and a Swim Teacher Step 2 Completion Letter.

Step 3 Unit Completion to receive Swim Teacher Statement of Attainment.
Candidates are to complete Step 3 (Post Course Workbook) and have their Approved Workplace Supervisor submit it to the closest Royal Life Saving Office. Upon successful submission, candidates will receive their Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher Statement of Attainment – which can be used to gain employment.
Applications submitted by candidates will not be considered and will be returned for resubmission by your Approved Workplace Supervisor.

Step 4 Complete Licensing Application. Candidates are requested to complete Step 4 (Licence Application) within the Post Course Workbook (Page 13 & 14). The Application is to be approved by your Approved Workplace Supervisor, who will then submit the application on your behalf to the closest Royal Life Saving Office.
Upon successful application, you will receive a Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher Licence. Applications submitted by candidates will not be considered and will be returned for resubmission by your Approved Workplace Supervisor.

** These training hours ensures the swim teacher can apply the skills learnt in the training course at their place of employment. The training hour components needs to be signed off by an Approved Workplace Supervisor. 
The amount of training is approximately 32 hours, comprising of:
  • Online learning and assessment: 9 hours
  • Face-to-Face assessment/supervised Instruction: 8 hours
  • Training hours: 12 hours
  • Workplace assessment: 3 hours    

Swim Teacher Licencing
The Licence Application is to be completed in full, submitted to your Approved Workplace Supervisor for final approval. Your Approved Workplace Supervisor will submit the application on your behalf to the closest Royal Life Saving Office. Applications submitted by candidates will not be considered and will be returned for submission by your Approved Workplace Supervisor.
The Swim Teacher Licence is record you can competently and confidently teach swimming skills to children ages and above.
 
All candidates are covered under Royal Life Saving Insurance until the final Statement of Attainment is issued. View our Swim Teacher Insurance Policy Document for further information.

Working With Children Checks
Candidates will require the relevant Working with Children Check in your State or Territory, to complete the Post Course Workbook (Steps 3 and 4). Swim Teachers are required to have a current Working with Children Check if they are paid or a volunteer.
Please be aware that some checks can take several weeks to be processed, it is recommended that you apply for your Working with Children Check (NSW), or Working With Vulnerable People check (ACT & Tasmania) as early as possible to avoid delays.

Candidates under 18 (NSW), 16 (ACT & Tasmania) may not be required to complete a Working With Children Check, it is recommended you confirm with your local State or Territory authority.

Prerequisites 
While there are no prerequisites to enrol on this course, candidates are required to have proficient swimming skills including the ability to perform survival strokes such as lifesaving backstroke and sidestroke.
 In addition, practical application of Resuscitation and other practical scenarios will require kneeling on the floor. To achieve HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation Statement of Attainment‚ candidates must successfully complete the practical components under the award conditions. 

 Age Requirement 
Candidates who want to complete this training must be at least 16 years old or turning 16 during the calendar year in which the course takes place. Candidates cannot obtain a Swim Teacher Licence until they are 16 years of age.

 Outcomes 
The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher course contains units of competency which are nationally recognised from the SIS Sport, Fitness and Recreation Training package.
Upon successful completion of all pre-course, on-course assessment and post-course requirements, course candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the SISSS00132 - Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Skillset: 
  • SISCAQU020 - Perform water rescues
  • SISCAQU023 - Plan swimming lessons
  • SISCAQU024 – Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
  • SISCAQU025 - Teach water safety and survival skills
  • SISCAQU026 – Teach swimming strokes
In addition, successful candidates will also attain:
  • HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation  
Achievement of these units provides credit towards SIS30122 - Certificate III in Sport, Aquatics and Recreation
